The basic structure and operation principle of three different topologies of multilevel inverters, namely diode clamped, capacitor clamped and cascaded H-bridge, are explored. Using selective harmonic elimination (SHE) and sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) switching modulation techniques to control, and its output voltage waveform characteristics and harmonic contents are analyzed. In addition, the ATPDraw is used to build the detailed model of power circuit and controller of the 7-level STATCOM, and then this compensators is connected with a test power system for simulation.
