Triangular Ag/Pd nanoplates were prepared via a galvanic displacement reaction in which added Pd(OAc)2 reacted with Ag nanoplates. The prepared Ag/Pd triangular nanoplates of different sizes were then used as novel activators for catalyzing electroless copper deposition. As supported by the analysis of quartz crystal microbalance and mixed potential theory, the alloy nanoplates can be successfully used as new activators and have the excellent activity for electroless copper bath. Additionally, based on the same synthesis method triangular Ag/Pd nanoplates with sawtooth edges were prepared though Ag nanoplates containing adsorbed hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as displacement templates. Control over the optical properties and catalytic activity of the these alloy nanoplates with sawtooth edges for electroless copper deposition could be achieved by varying the Ag/Pd alloying ratio.
