Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease. The disease control must be done by medication compliance which is important for SLE patients. The staff nurses should confirm medication compliance factors to provide the effective nursing instruction. The purpose of this study was to explore the behavior and important factors of SLE patients´ medication compliance. This study was done by purpose-sampling method at the OPD of Allergy Immunology and Rheumatology in a teaching hospital in central Taiwan, from May 4th, to June 6th, 2009, total 350 SLE patients. The data was collected by the questionnaires to carry on the medication compliance, and statistical analysis by the SPSS/PC 12.0 coverall software. The results showed as follows: (1) The ratio of SLE patients' medication compliance was 81.29%. (2) The ratio of female SLE patients to male was 13:1. The average age was 36.55 and average years of disease were 10.06 years. 90.86% of SLE patients followed up OPD routinely. (3) 80.57% of SLE patients held correct medication knowledge. The patients took positive attitude toward medication. 66.57% of patients had acknowledged the effects of medicine. Approximatly 30% of patients didn´t show side effects. “The Body Obese” accounted for most side effects (14.28%) and secondly “the G-I symptoms” (13.30%). In the medicine pattern, taking more than 3 kinds of medicine at a time accounted for 77.15%; more than 4 kinds at a time 72.56%; and less than two times a day 81.72%.The physician-patient relationship was good, and the family support was fair. (4)Significant variance in medication compliance was found in age, routine OPD follow-up, the medicine factors, the attitude to take medicine, and the support system. (5) The important factors of influencing medication compliance include: age, the medication factors, the attitude to take medicine, and the support system. The total variance in SLE patients was 17.1%. This findings may apply to the reference of nursing instruction in the clinical practice and medical treatment.
