Researchers have been seeking an understanding of our notion of classicism and classical fairy tales. Today, DreamWorks Animation plays a role in redefining classical fairy tales. The purpose of this research lies in understanding about how audiences interpret gender images and the ideology of the Shrek film series that also had great box office result in Taiwan. This research attempts to analyze the literary text and the subversion of classical fairy tales. It also analyzes the socio-cultural context within which the audiences may draw to reflect and interpret the story. 碩士 === 佛光大學 === 傳播學系 === 97 === Abstract
The Shrek film series from DreamWorks Animation have had tremendous audience appeal and enjoy world-wide popularity. The Shrek film series not only won the best Oscar Animation in 2002, but also rank high in the box office history. Moreover, these animated films are notable for being a subversion of "traditional fairy tales.” As such, they appeal to both children and adult audiences.
This research finds that the so-called literary technique, "appropriation" both underlies the form and the particular subject (i.e., gender). From the focus group interviews, this research shows how audiences interpret the text. Moreover, by analyzing the film text, this research draws on a structural method in order to consider the polysemy of the text. With these two approaches, this research concludes that audiences interpret the Shrek film series from their own socio-cultural context.
At last, with the two approaches this research finds that: 1.the "appropriation" in the film text is the design to the audiences by the narrator. 2. Find the interesting relationship between the audiences and the narrator. 3. The background of the audiences influences the interpretation of the text. 4. The consciousness and critique of being in the time of the postmodernism. 5. The representation of the gender images in the cultural industry.
