This thesis examines the initiation of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s thought on the Buddhist Revival Movement. It primarily focuses on the examination of the Dharma propagation of Ven. Master Hsing Yun from 1927 to 1967, which was the period from the birth of Ven. Master Hsing Yun to the period that was prior to the establishment of Fo Guang Shan, with a geographical span from mainland China to Taiwan. Since the information of the Dharma propagation of Ven. Master Hsing Yun during this period is generally limited and researches on this topic have not been studied yet, it makes the study challenge. The method useed for this research is a biographical analysis of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s monastic life in systematic historical approach from his monastic initiation, through his study in forest life, an attempt on the Buddhist reformation after completing the study in forest life, experiencing the life of roaming in short period of time in Taiwan after he came from mainland China, to the fruitful result of chanting assembly in Yilan. Lastly this thesis discusses the relationship between Ven. Matser Hsing Yun and the Buddhist Association of Republic of China.
Since this was a period that significantly made mainland China and Taiwan into connection and continuation, there were some conflicts and integration in religion. Therefore, this thesis will provide a reference on the change and development of Buddhism in Taiwan. In particular, this study refers to some considerable historical information concerning some significant Buddhist masters coming to Taiwan in 1949. Therefore, the Buddhist history in Taiwan in 1949 could be deemed as a microcosm of Buddhism of Taiwan after the World War II. This thesis will provide a perspective on interaction of Buddhism of Taiwan in the early period and Chinese Buddhism from a historical approach that demonstrates the conflicts and integration of Buddhism of Taiwan in the early period and Chinese Buddhism, especially on the process of Buddhism of Taiwan become sinicized. In addition, it will illustrate that the progress of Buddhism in Taiwan is attributed to the efforts of some senior monks from mainland China.
This article will verify a number of historical documents. As for the study of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s biography and thought, his work, the A Hundred Words of the Past, will be used as a basis, and other monthly magazines, which are based on this work, such as Chuh Ching Weekly 覺群, Juesheng 覺生, Life 人生, Buddhism Today 今日佛教, Awakening the world 覺世, and so forth, published in Taiwan and other articles written in his early time in mainland China will be referred to as well. These written works provide information of the propagation of Buddhism that Ven. Master Hsing Yun did in his early period of propagation in Taiwan as well as the process of the rise of Buddhism. In addition, Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s works illustrate a critical change on the relationship between Ven. Master Hsing Yun and the Buddhist Association of Republic of China, and this critical change ultimately leads to a result of the establishment of Foguangshan in Southern Taiwan. This paper will provide a systematic analysis on Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s thought that will primarily emphasize on the period before his great work of the establishment of Foguagshan. This work will provide a reference on the initiation of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s thought on the Buddhist Revival Movement in objective view, and I hope it will bring some contribution for further academic studies in the future.
