Among the factors of consuming power in a mobile node, sending and receiving data dominates the major power consumption. Therefore, how to improve the bit error rate of transmissions to have high transmission bandwidth becomes a challenge in designing a power-aware routing protocol. In previous research, the power-aware routing protocols focused on the goals of reducing power consumption, extending the network lifetime by taking into account the remaining power, or both. However, these works did not consider the transmission bandwidth issue. Therefore, the designed power-aware routing protocols may consume much power to transmit data because of poor transmission bandwidth. However, finding a path with high transmission bandwidth always consume much power to find many routing paths and then selects the path with the highest bandwidth. Once the found path is broken during the data transmission, the procedure of finding an alternative path with high transmission bandwidth also consumes much power. As a result, how to design a power-aware routing protocol to find a path with high transmission bandwidth and have a path-maintenance mechanism to keep the transmission path and avoid path broken is an important problem. In this thesis, we proposed a signal-based power-aware routing protocol to find a high bandwidth path for power saving without the help of GPS. In addition, to keep the routing path to have good bandwidth and avoid path broken, we also proposed a path-maintenance mechanism with the relay of neighbors. In the path-maintenance mechanism, we show the relay model and analyze when a node in the path modifies the routing path by the relay of its neighbor to keep the routing path to have good transmission bandwidth and avoid the situation of path broken. Finally, to show our proposed routing protocol and path-maintenance mechanism can efficiently save power, we compared our proposed routing protocols with two famous routing protocols, AODV and DSR, and two power-aware routing protocols, MMBCR and PAMP, in terms of average transmission bandwidth of the routing path, power consumed by path-discovery phase, and power efficiency that power consumed by transmitting a byte of data on average.
