This study tries to construct a rural-urban interaction model based on the high level of similarity between urban population dynamics and ecological population dynamics. The Lotka-Volterra model frequently used to describe the dynamics of biological systems in which two species interact, one a predator and one its prey, is used to simulate rural-urban interaction.
Stepwise regression is employed to find the coefficients of the model equations. Time series analysis, phase diagram, Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagram are used to characterize the interaction and to prove the existence of chaos for statistical data of urban and rural population in Taiwan from 1921 to 2005. The socioeconomic problems corresponding to the chaos phenomenon should be investigated in the future.
