Therefore, improving the performance of highway systems by transportation management techniques becomes important. In this study, a microscopic traffic flow simulation platform based on cellular automata is developed to simulate traffic flow so as to provide traffic information. According to the information, we can develop and evaluate traffic control strategies to deal with traffic congestion. Furthermore, the developed platform is applied to simulate advanced vehicle control and safety systems. From the numerical results, AVCSS can improve the average speed and flow significantly. Traffic cellular automata model can be employed to design the gap between two successive vehicles to improve the traffic flow and ensure the reliability of the system. Multi-class users and multilane traffic flow are left for further study.
