Considering that UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) has been adopted in UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) as the unique device identifier, we design a mechanism to discover a user via his/her carrying device’s UUID, based on the one-to-one mapping relationship between the mnemonic user name and his/her device’s UUID at any given time. We consider a wireless network environment where devices typically have IEEE 802.11 and/or Bluetooth interfaces. By integrating discoveries via IEEE 802.11 infrastructure mode, IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode, as well as the Bluetooth interface, we are able to discover users/devices in various scenarios, including ones that have only the Bluetooth interfaces. Furthermore, with the help of the Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) profile, we are able to bridge the IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth protocols, allowing a device that has limited communicatory capability to be able to connect to the Internet via the cooperative communication between the two heterogeneous wireless technologies. In this thesis, we have defined the user discovery architecture and designed its suitable protocl. Through the protocol we have designed, we can discover users without knowing their IP addresses and create routing paths to connect and communicate with the communication devices that users carry.
