The aim is to discover the unequal relations between graduate students and their supervisors. The method to carry out this study was critical ethnography, combining traditional ethnography and critical theory, regarding with Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy. The followings are the main purposes of this research: (1) to discover how the unequal relations work in dissertation supervisions; (2) to discover how the unequal relations operate during graduate-students’ executing their supervisors’ research programs; (3) to discover how the unequal relations represent when switching supervisors; (4) to explore how the participants, after leaving oppressive field, would reflect with the oppressors, oppressions and resistance. The research findings are as follows: (1) on dissertation supervision: the unequal relations start from the beginning of supervision; the differential treatments from supervisors make graduate students self-devaluate themselves and alienate from each other; some suggestions of supervisors make graduate students feel hard to decide the subject and matter by themselves; the frequency and quality of meeting is not so good owing to the different degree of investing in the dissertation from both sides; and the horizontal violence causes the loss of peer support.(2) on processes of executing research programs: the forces from the supervision relationships make graduate students feel hard to decline their assistant work; the program host uses money to buy the value of labor of the assistants and their breath space; the program host pursues the perfect quality of the program; the relationship between the peer students is used as a tool of condemn; and the dissertation is a secret weapon to make the assistants obey order. (3) on replacing supervisors: replacing supervisors is still a taboo covered by academic freedom; the graduate student when replacing supervisors must have “proper” reasons; the degree of resistance from graduate students is affected by the peer students and other professors; and the research participants when replacing supervisors successfully is still hard to get rid of their dependence. (4) on self-reflection of research participants: even though the research participants’ concientization does not become critical, their mind still has refined due to their resistant actions. The recommendations from this research are as follows: (1) for graduate students: to understanding their limit-situations critically and continuously; to achieve unity between the peer students; and to keep pursuing the feasibility of resistance. (2) for supervisors: to acknowledge themselves as oppressors; to pay attention to the individual differences among students; to strengthen the research ethics for doing research programs; and to rethink the informal tacit agreements of their supervision. (3) for academic institutions: to make clear statements of responsibility to avoid the abusing of research assistants; and to set up the evaluation system rigidly. (4) for follow-up research: to enquiry the later stage of supervision; to contain the viewpoints of supervisors; and to explore the supervision relationships of doctoral dissertation. 李奉儒 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 177 zh-TW
