They are tungsten carbide (WC), tungsten (W), and tungsten oxide (WO3). The study was divided into three parts: (1) synthesis of WC nanoparticles by CVD method using catalyst coating, (2) synthesis of 0-D and 1-D W nanomaterials by carbothermal reduction method, and (3) synthesis of 1-D WO3 nanomaterials by hydrothermal method. In the first part of the research, we synthesized WC nanoparticles using Ni(NO3)2 catalyst precursor. Tungsten carbide nanoparticles were formed by CVD method at 800 oC. Experimental parameters were discussed for reducing the size of WC nanoparticles and the characteristic of WC nanoparticles for the electrochemical application was analysized. In the second part of the research, 0-D and 1-D W nanomaterials were synthesized using WO3 powder and carbon nanocapsule (CNC) by carbothermal reduction method. The experimental parameters such as W/C ratio and temperature ramping rate were discussed for reducing the size of 0-D W nanomaterials. The result showed that the size of 0-D W nanomaterials was about 100 nm while the diameter of 1-D W nanomaterials was 35±10 nm. In final part of the research, 1-D WO3 nanomaterials were produced by hydrothermal method at 180 oC. The result showed that the diameter of 1-D WO3 nanomaterials was about 21±7 nm. The structure and the growth direction of 1-D WO3 nanomaterials were hexagonal and [002], respectively. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray diffraction spectroscope (XRD) were conducted to characterize the morphology, structure, and crystallography of tungsten-based nanomaterials.
