It connotes the copious meanings of culture and the author''s deep worries about circumstances. The fiction depicted that Gao saw and heard on his trip. There was not a conflict of external environment but Gao’s spiritual feelings and reflection. Thus “Soul Mountain” was that Gao cast at his life. Look at his process of life which meant “death→born→flight→ (Conversion) Test→deprivation→discovery”. On the surface, although the protagonist went in search of Soul Mountain, he also peeled his internal on the way. This way that Gao abandoned his secular life and surveyed himself, was not only repentance but also a very in-depth awareness.
In addition to this, what Gao intended to express were more explorations in his mind.Therefore Gao Xingjian described this work like an autobiography to express his inner contradictions and uncertainty. He even abandoned traditional writing structure of novels to express his inner spiritual imagery and living attitude by high personalization of writing. Gao Xingjian fully used language to connect with soul and wrote real humanity. “Soul Mountain” was Gao’s real record of mind.
Everyone has a“Soul Mountain” in heart. As for the mountain being found or not there, it is less important. Gao Xingjian filtered out his own soul impurities gradually through the process of exiling himself, traveling of bitter and searching. Gao turned over the humanity from the details that were exposed reluctantly to most people. It is a self-help journey that the sprit prisoner escaped through finding “Soul Mountain”.
Gao Xingjian sought and got rid of himself. He formed a battlefield that never stopped fighting out of in the deep of his soul. Finding Soul Mountain was his fate from self-awareness. He had to throw himself into the abyss of bitter to awake and relive. All the escape and breakthrough of breaking master ideology agreed to his representation of individual course, so the searching of “Soul Mountain” was his exploration of life. The ultimate meaning of “Soul Mountain” was an Utopian that Gao Xingjian had been looking for a place to pacify his soul for a long time.
