China’s economy and trade has developed dramatically after it became a member of WTO in 2001. In the meantime, the demand for financial and banking services has also grown rapidly. All the banks in the world want to jump on the bandwagon. The Chinese government started to ease up the restrictions for foreign banks in 2006. Now they have equal opportunity to compete with domestic banks. What kind of strategies can foreign banks use to meet this huge demand in China. Also, when facing this big challenge, what kind of strategies to domestic banks need to have in order to be competitive in this financial market.
The author gathered information to analyze three foreign banks—Citibank, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank. Each bank uses different strategies to gain market share. Domestic banks also work very hard to get their market share. The advantages of foreign banks are globalization, management skills and innovation on products. The advantage of domestic banks is localization. The author analyzed and compared all the strategies which impact the financial markets and provides information for those foreign banks that are interested in the Chinese market.
