Description
Summary:碩士 === 雲林科技大學 === 漢學資料整理研究所碩士班 === 96 === Master Tan Shu became a monk in his middle age and derived from Tiantai Buddhism. He aimed at building temples and educating monks, and was the first person who spread and exalted Tiantai Buddhism in the north east. In the chotic early years of the Republic of China, his missionary work had not been stopped and the number of temples he built would hardly be competed with at that time. This article intends to discuss the missionary history of Master Tan Shu and his synthesis of TianTai Buddhism and Buddha Recitation. Although Master Tan Shu inherited the Tiantai Buddhism, he regarded “Teaching Tian Tai, Practicing in Pure Land” as his practicing principle. He advised people to recite Buddha, read analects, meditate and stick to “Three Refuges and Five Precepts”, in order to obtain happiness, to get away from pains and to get to Buddhist Paradise. The thoughts of Buddha recitation influences Master Tan Shu a lot. If Buddhism is his destination in the latter part of his life and Tiantai Teaching Meditation is the religion he worships and believes, Buddha Recitation is a simple way of his missionary. This thesis is composed by six chapters. The fist chapter is the introduction which specifies the motivation, object, research method and the discussion of previous research results. Chapter 2 is about the background of Master Tan Shu’s time, the development of Buddhism at that time, and the circumstances of his missionary in the north east. Chapter 5 is about Master Tan Shu’s thoughts of recollection Buddha. Chapter 6 is the summary which concludes the results of every chapter.
