Using the high-strength materials, a new reinforced concrete building can reduce the sizes of structural members, the material amount, and the structural weight. More floor areas can be used and construction cost is significantly reduced. The major challenge is how to design a safe earthquake-resistant structure with high strength materials. Almost available test results of high-strength concrete columns are reduced-scale tests due to the limitation of testing capacity. The application of high-strength materials in real construction is still controversial. New experimental studies for high-strength reinforced concrete columns are needed. This project is planing to test 21 full-scale units of high-strength reinforced concrete columns subjected to monotonic axial loads up to 3000 tons. The primary testing variables are the concrete strength, yield strength of reinforcement, detailing and spacing of the lateral reinforcement. The axial load capacities and current stress-strain models of confined concrete will be evaluated using full scale test units. Full-scale tests are helpful to clarify the size effect.
