The performances as well as details concerning the membrane bioreactors and the microbial communities are investigated. The membrane bioreactors were operating as a sequencing batch reactors to meet the requirement of regeneration for exhausted zeolite. After cultivating a mixed bacterial consortia enriched on the 0.9 M NaCl of synthetic ammonia brine, a continuous study is then carried out on the degradations of regeneration brine by the enriched bacteria in response to the change of salt tress. On the other hand, the experimental of the factors having impact on ammonium exchange on zeolite were operating batchwise to acquire the operation kinetics of ion exchange and the regeneration phase. Finally a long-term operation of membrane bioreactor and conventions activated sludge bioreactor was tested. During the period of operation, the performances of both reactors are monitored frequently. In addition, after the activity of membrane bioreactors become stable, the diversity of halotolerant ammonia oxidizing bacteria was investigated using 16SrDNA cloning technique. It is expected this subsequent research, with a deeper understanding into the microorganism composition and process mechanisms, would be helpful in solving the operational difficulty, thus leading to a successful commercialization of the membrane bioreactor technology.
