In Taiwan, Tzu Chi Foundation is praised for its environmental philosophy and practices.
The purpose of this research is to probe the views and actions of Tzu Chi Foundation in environmental protection and to explore its establishment in philosophy and ethics. Observation, in-depth interview, and data analysis were used as the research methods in the investigation.
The result is that environmental ethics in Tzu Chi Foundation are in accordance with its practices. The major environmental philosophy of Tzu Chi is based on “the theory of origin”, “equality of all creatures”, “hostility”, “in reality empty yet wonderfully present”, “a single thought”, and “humane” in Buddhism. The environmental ethics, on the other hand, were founded on the forum of “reducing desire and finding contentment”, “care of our nature”, “respect of lives”, “treasure the resources ”, and “self compliment”, matching some of the theories from western.
The practices of Tzu Chi environmental actions can be seen on vary aspects, conservation, pollution prevention, environmental education, energy saving, and recycle. Finally, some suggestions were made for the future study and NGO development.
