Summary: | 碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 幼兒教育學系碩士班 === 96 === The purpose of this study was to explore children’s comprehension and appreciation of humor in picture books. In this study, three different types of picture books were read to children. The numbers of subjects were 40. They were the first graders in elementary school and children of 4 years olds from kindergarten. When the child heard the story read by the researcher page by page, the child needed to point out the place he/she thought it was funny and explained the reasons to the researcher. After the story was read to the child, the child also needed to express the overall feeling of amusement about the story on a rating scale to show how funny he/she thought the story was. The comprehension of humor was scored according to six categories which were “physics aspect”, “funny of connotation and meaning”, ”incongruity of connotation and meaning”, “illustration–word interwork”, ” continuity of illustrations or words”, and “continuity of all the action”. The appreciation of humor was scored by the amusing scale. The results of this study were that the comprehension of humor between two age groups was significantly different, but there were no differences among texts. However, the appreciation of humor between two age groups was no significant, the text differences were significant. The scoring system which made the age differences significant was discussed. The implications of choosing the humor texts also provided.
