Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 化學學系碩士班 === 96 === Biaxial liquid crystals are predicted to exhibit significantly shorter switching time than uniaxial calamitic ones that are currently used in liquid crystal displays. In this study, rigid Y-shaped and board like compounds were synthesized and their potential biaxiallity was envestigated and verified by optical and X-ray diffraction studies. Influences of geometrical molecular shapes as well as molecular polarities on optical biaxiallity were exploited.
