In Chinese society, people usually believe that chrysanthemum flowers possess some constitutional functions, such as anticancer, antioxidant and antibacterial activity. However, this viewpoint requires more experimental data to support. In this study, we have gathered eleven flower samples (seven kinds of chrysanthemum flower and three kinds of chamomile), and the extracts of these flower were used as experimental samples. The amount of lutein and phenolic compounds, the activities of antioxidant, and the efficiency of antibacterial were measured . The data showed that the lutein content of Taitung chamomile was high than the other samples’ ; the chrysanthemum flower of Hang-chow contained more phenolic compounds than the other samples’, and displayed the best activity on scavenging free radical ; all the extract samples expressed the antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus ; the extract of Taitung chamomile prepared with ethyl acetate revealed cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines of A549 and Huh7. Data from flow cytometry indicate the extracts might be able to induce apoptotic cell death in the cancer cells. These bioactive compounds have been partial purified using HPLC.
