Description
Summary:碩士 === 世新大學 === 廣播電視電影學研究所(含碩專班) === 96 === New issues covered by the media frequently reflect various phenomena demonstrated as results of human social changes. Global warming and Kyoto Protocol are environmental protection related issues of concern and wide discussions in the 21st century. However, local media report analysis and social and scientific oriented investigations are still inadequate. In response to the global warming, Kyoto Protocol, and environmental awareness trends, discussions from viewpoints of mass media shall be conducted in this research to analyze how foreign media cover news reports on global warming and Kyoto Protocol related issues and their core frame. Meanwhile, the focuses and opinions of experts and researchers in global environmental protection related areas are also found. Content Analysis and in-depth interviews are adopted as the study methods in this research. In terms of content analysis, “New York Times (U.S.A)” is selected as the target for analysis. The news on global warming and Kyoto Protocol covered between 2001-2007 (7 years) are collected. The news reports obtained then undergo stratified random sampling as to year at an interval scale of 2. A total of 1,002 samples have been collected. In terms of in-depth interview, interviewees are classified into local and overseas interviewees via email online. A total of 26 interviewees including 5 local and 21 foreign researchers underwent the interview successfully. The research finds that the report of media at concerning global warming and Kyoto Protocol issues presented a trend of which changed from steady decrease to drastic increase between 2001-2007. The proportion of the media’s news sourced from “the government”, and “experts and researchers” are the highest and “the general public” is the lowest. As the issues took their effects, the media’s concern turned from “international politics” into “environmental protection education” aspect. They also changed from passivity to activeness in terms of the their attitude in handling the matters. In addition, the content analysis and in-depth interviews verified that global warning and Kyoto Protocol related issues did not receive much attention whereas foreign media were demanded to upgrade their reporting quality on these issues. Although some parts of the Kyoto Protocol remain controversial, with the world’s growing concern for environmental protection and sustainable developments, this protocol is the initiator for shared responsibilities among nations at present in view of environmental protection and sustainable developments. Its future developments are therefore mandatory.
