Eleven-year dynamics of woody communities in a temperate evergreen broad-leaved forest in Mt. Peitungyen, central Taiwan

碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 生態學研究所 === 96 === In 1996, a forest dynamics plot of 3 ha was established in Mt. Peitungyen , Central Taiwan. All free-standing woody plants ≧1cm dbh were identified to species, measured, and mapped. The second census was completed in 2007. These data of 1st and 2nd censuses were com...

All free-standing woody plants ≧1cm dbh were identified to species, measured, and mapped. The second census was completed in 2007. These data of 1st and 2nd censuses were compared in order to understand the change of forest composition and structure and determine the rate of tree mortality, recruitment, and DBH increment. In 2007, 60 species and 17,307 individuals were recorded, 345 of total individuals were recognized as missed in 1st census, and they were excluded from the discussion of forest dynamics. After 11 years, the population density increased very much (9,180; 69.47 %, 11 yr), however, the basal area decreased a bit (23.30 m2; 8.7 %, 11yr). The recruitment rate was dramatically high ( 91.72%, 11 yr ; 7.08 %, yr-1 ), although the mortality rate was low ( 22.25 %, 11 yr ; 2.29% yr-1 ) both them gave rise to the population density elevated highly. The loss rate of basal area was 17.76 % ( 11 yr), the growth rate of basal area was 11.45 %, and the recruitment rate of basal area was 1.38, so that the basal area reduced a few. The change of dominant species was slightly, the top 10 was very similar, only Malus doumeri (Bois) Chev. was dramatically elevated to the third, and Elaeocarpus japonicus Sieb. & Zucc. rose to tenth. At family level, top 4 still included Fagaceae, Lauraceae, Theaceae and Melastomataceae, and Rosaceae replaced Ericaceae to rank 5. In vertical structures, canopy trees and subcanopy trees were both decreased(canopy:785→698 stems; subcanopy:3396→3076 stems) but shrubs raised hugely(3396→3076 stems)。The dominance species in every layer were resembled , only Malus doumeri (Bois) Chev. added to subcanpy and shrub. The forest might be disturbed by typhoon during the past 11 years, so that several canopy trees died, then the light and space were released to the shrub.
