| Summary: | 碩士 === 中國文化大學 === 戲劇研究所 === 96 === The purpose of this thesis is based on Formalism to analyze Bertolt Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle", and to find out the reason why Brecht created the prominent drama that is quite different from the Yuan drama "The Chalk Circle".
First of all, this thesis is based on the principle structure of Aristotle’s "Poetics" and the theory of Brecht's Episches Theater, analyzing "The Chalk Circle" and "The Caucasian Chalk Circle". We will show how Bertolt changed the plot structure of "The Chalk Circle" by concentrate on the “ownership” and applying Episches Theater to this drama to make it different from traditional structure and create a totally different drama from the main frame of "The Chalk Circle"
After comparing these two dramas, we will use the two types of formalism, the concepts of literary autonomy and the structural forms, as tools to understand how “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” plots structure using a cluster of catching imagery, such as valley, ground, goose, maid, general, archduke, rabbit, judge, etc., to show the theme of ownership. And by creating different conflict incident, it introduces different levels of ownership and this leads to the great success of this production.
This is a whole new vision on script analysis by applying formalism on drama. Under the help of professor, this thesis is the first of all time to use this approach. If there are any similar research result has been found, it will need to be proved and confirmed.
