According to literature reports, a lot of tanshinones were isolated and identified from methanolic extracts of S. miltiorrhiza and many of them were also reported to exhibit diverse biological activities such as antitumor, antioxidant, antiplatelet aggregation activities. In our previous studies, neo-tanshinlactone was isolated as minor component from the dried roots of S. miltiorrhiza and showed selective anti-breast cancer activity. Because neo-tanshinlactone showed selective anti-breast cancer activity, this compound may have potential to develop as a new anti-breast cancer drug. In order to further study the structure and activity relationship, in this study, twelve neo-tanshinlactone analogues (7, 8a, 8b, 9, 10a, 10b, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18) were synthesized.
