博士 === 中國文化大學 === 史學研究所 === 96 === The heyday of the T'ang Dynasty was a golden age in the history of Chinese calligraphy. Each style, including Chên (真), Hsing (行)、Ts'ao (草)、Pa Fên (八分), had its own brilliant performances. With the passage of time, except few of then famous calligraphers’ works, other calligraphers' works are hardly available up to present. This has made the later generations assess the features of the high T'ang Pa Fên calligraphy not even-handed. With the study of tombstone inscriptions emerging, people tend to put Wei tombstone inscriptions ahead of T'ang tombstone inscriptions and even have had a stereotyped misunderstanding. Therefore, this dissertation aims to re-structure the prosperous phenomenon of the high T'ang Pa Fên calligraphy based on newly excavated tombstone inscriptions and textual materials.
