Similarly, the public participation movement, proposed by the Taiwan’s Council for Cultural Affairs, was initiated since 1993. One of the purposes under the movement was to enhance the sense of community and to promote self-governance community, since the traditional attachment of community, once existed in the village, was declined after economic growth and social structural changes (from three generations together living in a family to single family). Today, the sense of community has become an underlying key of promoting local autonomy. Through increasing opportunities of face-to-fact community contacts and providing diverse community activities within the community, planners and researchers believe that the interactions will make residents in the neighborhood attaching to each other and feel proud. The “cul-de-sac” community layout is a kind of spatial arrangement to serve the above purpose. Moreover, the strategy of New Urbanism is another example of elevating the level of attachment and pride by providing pedestrian-oriented environment. This study aims to understand the underlying relationships between sense of community and its spatial configuration via interviewing community members and following by questionnaire surveys based on the psychological sense of community measures. The research finds that neighborhood activity centers play an important role in forming the sense of community. Based on Chi-square analysis, ANOVA, Regression, and Cluster Analyses, the result from the questionnaire surveys shows that residents above 40 years old, married, educations under high school, and higher neighborhood density tend to create higher degree of sense of community. Also, the more the residents participate in community affairs, the higher the neighborhood attachment, thereby making a self-sustained community. To understand the relationships between sense of community with the spatial characteristics of the neighborhoods, the study concludes that there are six types of neiborhoods in Bei-tou district, according to the conditions of nearby public transit stations, enclosed community, and community locating at remote area.
