This dissertation aims to demonstrate that Internet signs and words, and the virtual space of the Internet are influential in shaping individual artistic creation in recent years. It is no doubt that the Internet has gradually permeated into the contemporary society and becomes one of the most widespread used tools in daily life. Likewise, art, as a creative re-presentation of the lifeworld, will inevitably have new art forms owing to the prevalence of the Internet. Given that Taiwan is a multiple and diversified society, how may each artist, with material accessible at their disposal, produce artistic works that not only reflect the zeitgeist and the artist’s own aura, but can be effectively applied to the society as well?
Although a plethora of pictures, graphs, and words from the Internet brings benefits and conveniences to our lives, the Internet is not without misleading information and pitfalls. Hence, by communicating and exchanging views with the viewers through artistic works, I attempt to reconstruct both signs and words and to juxtapose pictures and graphs as a way to examine the truthfulness of information that we always take for granted.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to discuss the origin of the Internet, the development of the Internet nowadays, and the impact of the Internet to individual creation. Sections of the study are as follows:
a. Literature reviews on the origin and development of cyber-art.
b. To analyze the multiplicity and creativity of cyber-works via the Internet and cyber-art.
c. Based on the theory of cyber-phenomena and Western semiology, I will explore the interrelationship among signs, words, pictures, and graphs, and the correlation between them and individual artistic works.
d. Affected cyber-signs and words, how can one imbue the experience of creation with art works through transformation or the use of metaphor that will broaden the thematic horizon of the work?
e. To present the effect of the Internet on art form with real art works. Using signs and words, I will discuss the relationship between the virtual Internet and the actual life. Finally, I will demonstrate the art works by juxtaposing pictures and words.
Keywords: Internet, cyberspace, sign, word, juxtaposition of pictures and words
