Four process parameters are considered and Taguchi method is applied in experimental planning. The extrusion load, tensile strength, and bending strength of extruded parts are analyzed for finding the influence of parameter on the products and the optimal experiment parameters. Besides, the additive model of Taguchi method is applied to calculate the level of optimal parameter and the S/N ratio. After comparing the S/N ratio and experimental value, the influence of each process parameter on the extrusion load and mechanical properties can be obtained. The difference in mechanical properties and the extrusion load between AZ31 and AZ61 magnesium alloys are discussed. Moreover, 6061 aluminum alloy, is adopted to carry out the same experiments and tests as magnesium alloys. Finally, metallographic microstructure and hardness of extruded parts are observed to find the variance of grain size and hardness under different extrusion temperatures. Through a series of experiments and analysis, the optimal parameter combination can be found and the best mechanical properties of the extruded parts can be obtained by using less energy.
