It is demonstrated that an optical fiber transmission can improve the DVB-T broadcasting in the poor receiving area. Experimental results are shown of the back to back transmission, the 1-km and 4-km single-mode fiber, and the 1-km multi-mode fiber. A study is also made of the temperature effect on the VCSEL. Measument results on the VCSEL & FP laser diode are shown. First, the standards and recent development of DVB-T in Taiwan are introduced. Analyses are made on the characteristics of lasers, including a DFB laser, a VCSEL, and a FP laser. Then, a low-cost optical receiver experiment is shown. Methods to reduce the electromagnetic interference in low-cost optical receiver are also discussed. In this thesis, the effect of the downstream singal on the upstream singal is investigated. The upstream and downstream transmission characteristics are also studied for different kind of fibers. Moreover, the effects of optical modulation depth and the temperature on the transmission performance are also discussed. A low-cost and un-cooled optical network having a downstream singal quality greater than 41%, a upstreanm singal Q greater than 6.7, and a total power penalty of 1.6dB is presented for bidirectional transmission.
