碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 造形藝術研究所 === 96 === This thesis pivots around the creative trails of Robert Ryman. First it discusses his Jazz music experience as well as his study of modern painting and his enlightenment when serving as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1953. Then it discusses the Ryman’s status in the artistic tide of the 1960s. In his early years Ryman had stressed the building of external environment. He had drawn up lines in a steady manner and spread to parameters, surfaces and walls. This had differentiated him from other contemporary artists and created the possibility of treating paintings as objects. Still next it studies two important genres which Ryman encountered in the early years of his creation, namely abstract expressionism and minimalism and the intermediary position between the two. But this intermediary positioning should not be recognized as an oversimplified and general constructive method. On the contrary, it might be able to help us to understand the common ground between the two genres and to review topics which have never been discussed in this field. At last the thesis analyzes on how Ryman’s pieces of work provide a lasting viewing experience, thus enabling them to cross to the field of phenomenology, which is a field other artists of minimalism and abstract expressionism think as unattainable with paintings.
