Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 高階公共管理組 === 96 === An emerging, superior technology is expected to be welcomed by the market and hence can substitute the existing, inferior technology. However, many cases indicate that such substitution won’t always happen. In other words, the critical determinant of technology competition may not be technology itself. What other factors are critical to the eventual commercial outcomes of adopting competing technologies?
Based on the secondary data of the main display of mobile phone, TFT LCD, and OLED technologies, and primary interviews with industry experts, the present study attempts to identify critical factors that determine the success of competition between OLED and TFT LCD technologies applied on the main display of mobile phone products. Building upon this analytical model, this study made a projection to the future competition of OLED and TFT LCD technologies applied in the TV markets.
This study found that, despite the fact that the OLED panels possess some superior characteristics over TFT LCD panels, the latter technology satisfies almost all required features for the needs of major panel of mobile phone products. The disadvantageous feature of TFT LCD happens to be not a key issue in application. Under such circumstances, the superior display quality yet relatively expensive OLED panels fail to create sustainable competitive advantages over TFT LCD panels in the main panel of mobile phones. Along this line of exploration, we suggest that as the display quality becomes a critical factor for TV products and the price gap between OLED and TFT LCD panels will be further narrowed, the competitiveness and positive prospect of OLED panels versus TFT LCD panels are highly expected in the future TV applications.
