The goal is to analyze defective sentences of a written essay, conclude the causes from the analysis of defective sentences, and provide the solutions to obtain effective improvement. There are seven chapters in this thesis including the forming possible causes, the diagnosis and the remedy of defective sentences of a student essay in elementary school. The findings of this research can provide teaching suggestions for teaching reference to enhance schoolchildren’s literacy and linguistic usage ability. What are the causes of defective sentences of a student essay? It is the primary cause that literacy and linguistic knowledge is insufficient. Secondly, in information and technology time there are lots of external stimuli including the dissemination of the network, misleading media and so on. In addition, there is no doubt that literacy and linguistic education does not put into practice. We must admit truly that literacy and linguistic ability is diminishing for students in elementary school. There is an only way to take the right remedial steps to correct shortcomings. The core of this research is to choose the Linguistics as the method to precede the analysis of defective sentences of an essay in elementary school and divide the wrong patterns into three aspects consisting of word usage, sentence structure and semantic expression. There are 270 defective sentences. The majority is improper word in sentences. There are 96 sentences. Secondly, there are 31 sentences which are repeated semantic. Thirdly, there are 28 sentences which elements are mutilated. The researcher supposes that there are eight items for improper word such as not to understand the meaning of word to cause misuse, misusing conjunction, misusing quantifier, misusing adverb, misusing preposition, misusing pronoun, dialect and oral habit to cause improper word, and misusing auxiliary word. However, the primary cause is still that literacy and linguistic knowledge is insufficient. What an important thing it is how to remedy the predicament that proficiency level is diminishing now. Besides, it is to take the right remedial actions to correct shortcomings.
