The main topics are the organizations, sites, and competitions of Taiwan rock climbing activity. The methodology is historical research assisted by investigating. The research range goes from 1945 to 2006. The conclusions are as follows: 1. Official rock climbing organizations are operated within Alpine Association of Republic of China. Private climbing clubs are also set up by rock climbing fans. These two kinds of groups together introduce the rock climbing activity to the public. In 1945 the rock climbing activity was continued by the Technique Section of Alpine Association of Republic of China. In the development process, many rock climbing fans also set up their own private clubs to popularize the activity. The licensing, regulations, and administration systems did not show up until the Skill Climbing Committee was established in 2000. 2. Natural rock climbing sites foster the activity, artificial climbing structures make it popular, and the management and administration are the keys to the sustainable use of these sites. Natural climbing sites such as Taipei Da Pao Rock were used as the training base. The sites near Taipei, such as Boar Rock and Long Dong Rock, were discovered. The rock sites of middle and southern Taiwan were relatively late for discovery. The first artificial climbing structure was introduced in 1989, and there were three hundred and four artificial ones in 2006 all over Taiwan. The population of rock climbing fans was increasing, but these artificial rock sites are not so frequently used unless they are well managed and propagandized. 3. In natural climbing sites most competitions are performances. The introduction of artificial sites makes the activity popular and the increasing competitions help the development of rock climbing. A rock climbing performance was held in 1954 at Da Pao Rock in Taipei. After the introduction of artificial sites in 1989, there were a lot of various kinds of competitions being held. However, not many of them were continued consistently. The representative competitions are Rock Fans Cup, President Cup, and College Cup. These competitions include Difficulty Climbing, Speed Climbing, and Bouldering. Taiwan climbers are not good at international climbing competitions.
