How to transfer its competitive technology and core competencies among subsidiaries and how to facilitate subsidiaries to become an incubator of innovation center are crucial issues. Although some researches have addressed the characteristics and effects of knowledge transfer, little is known about how the knowledge flow be effectively delivered. In addition, because the head office and its subsidiaries are differently located, in terms of cultural and organizational distances, to establish an efficient knowledge flow mechanism is important for performance. Thus, the main purpose of this research is: first, to explore the relationships between knowledge characteristics, distances, and transfer performance; second, to examine the moderating effects of knowledge flow mechanism on those relationships. Semiconductor industry is the most value-added global industry. It creates high volumes of knowledge flow and thus provides a good study framework for this study. Followed by a pilot study, 728 questionnaires were sent to senior managers in Taiwanese semiconductor industries. The response rate is 21.15 percent. After utilizing various statistical tests, this study finds that explicit knowledge, organization distances, sharing motivations and socialization are significant factors affecting knowledge transfer performance. In addition, utilizing formal communication and socialization, companies can reduce both cultural and organizational distances among subsidiaries. Thus, performance of knowledge transfer is enhanced.
