Literature review and content analysis were employed to analyze the contents, the proportion of the native teaching materials, the focused subjects, and the trend of the Chinese textbooks published by Nanyi, Kangshuan, and Hanlin in the academic year of 2007. In accordance with the goal of this research and its approaches, the following conclusions are presented: 1. Descriptive articles are too many considering the literary style of the textbook contents. The diversity of the included articles is important. None of the three versions carries the drama style in the textbooks used for the sixth-grade students. 2. The Hanlin version has the largest proportion of the native teaching materials. 3. Among the subjects of the native teaching materials, the subject on natural environments has the largest proportion for all three versions. 4. Regarding the family affections, the Hanlin version has more diversity on family-related subjects. For all three versions, the theme on father-and-son affections outnumbers other themes related to family life. 5. Regarding the social issues, the Hanlin version has more topics on community activities, which carry Taiwan consciousness. 6. Regarding the natural environments, the Hanlin version focuses on geographical locations and environment protection whereas the Kangshuan version focuses on animals and plants. Both versions feature their own Taiwan consciousness. 7. More folktales and Taiwanese classical poetry should be added to all three versions. 8. Most of the biographies describe great events of ordinary people in the twentieth century. As far as gender is concerned, male-related biographies outnumber female-related ones. 9. Among the works of famous Taiwanese writers, more selections were placed on prose and less on juvenile novels. 10. Choosing the works of famous writers is the trend for the revision of the textbooks. Based on the conclusions of this study, suggestions are made to the editors of the textbooks and the teachers using the books. The directions for future studies are provided as well. Abstract
This research aims at studying the native teaching materials carried in the Chinese textbooks used for fifth- and sixth-grade students in elementary schools. Literature review and content analysis were employed to analyze the contents, the proportion of the native teaching materials, the focused subjects, and the trend of the Chinese textbooks published by Nanyi, Kangshuan, and Hanlin in the academic year of 2007. In accordance with the goal of this research and its approaches, the following conclusions are presented:
