The purposes of this study were to design and construct a virtual reality web-based digital teaching material for elementary schools about “Moon Misconceptions” in the field of nature science and life technology and to observe its designing possibility and teaching effects. There were 185 students in the third and fourth grade from Taipei Happy Elementary School participated in the study as research objects. This study followed the five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation and formative evaluation. Based on theory of inquiry teaching, this 3D Virtual Reality interactive instruction website was developed into ten units with the theme of Moon Misconceptions. Next, the research objects were divided into six groups: the controlled group-students in the third and fourth grade with no experiment involved; the experiment group A-students in the third and fourth grade required to operate the website alone; the experiment group B-students in the third and fourth grade who operated the website with the instructor’s guidance. The conclusions of the study were as followings: First, the appliance of the Virtual Reality to design and construction of the Web-based digital teaching materials is possible. In the analysis phase, the researcher developed a series of learning objectives after analyzing the needs assessment, learners’ characteristics, learning context and contents; In the design phase, the researcher designed the courseware and the interface based on the analysis phase. In the development phase, the researcher used software (Virtools, Maya, Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustartor etc.) to develop the website; In the formative evaluation phase, the researcher amended and developed the teaching material according to the suggestions from astronomers, teachers in the field of nature science and life technology and professional designers to ensure the quality of the courseware. Second, the teaching website had different effects on students in different ages. The result of the study showed that the fourth graders were more suitable to use virtual reality websites to study the knowledge of the moon compared with the students in the third grade. The possible reason was that the students in the fourth grade had relatively higher capability of abstract learning and thinking. Third, different teaching methods had difference learning effects. This research tried to compare three groups: controlled group, experiment group A and the experiment group B to understand the learning effects in the different teaching methods. The results said that if the teacher could give the students guidance before their operating on the virtual reality website, the learning effect on the students was higher than it on the students who browsed the website alone, especially for the third-grade students. In other words, with the timely help from teachers could increase the teaching effects with fewer efforts. In addition, this study found that the learning might also be limited due to the factors of course time scheduling, scoring method and course subjects. According to the conclusions mentioned above, the researcher proposed the following suggestions: to develop the teaching material in team work; to apply virtual reality to elementary school’s teaching materials in the field of nature science and life technology; to adopt the teaching method that students use the websites after teacher's instruction; to understand students’ appropriate preparing knowledge as the foundation to develop the teaching materials.
