By employing “The Melodic Perception Rating Scale” as the evaluation tool, this study adopts the posttest-only control group design of quasi-experimental approach. The participants are 64 third-grade students from A Elementary School in Ping-Tong County. They were divided into two groups based on purposive sampling: the experimental group and the control group, and each consisted of 32 students. The experimental group received a weekly 40-minute inner hearing training course for ten weeks while the control group adopted regular music lessons. Ten weeks later, both groups were assessed according to “The Melodic Perception Rating Scale.” The evaluated data was compiled and analyzed through the Statistical Package, SPSS13.0. Finally, it was measured by “Descriptive Statistics,” “Independent-Sample T-Test,” “Two-Way ANOVA” in order to compare the variables, such as different teaching methods, gender, and music learning backgrounds. Here are the findings of this study: 1. The Inner Hearing Training method employed in music courses significantly improved the melodic aural ability of the participants. 2. Improvement on the melodic aural ability of participants who received Inner Hearing Training was the same for girls and boys. 3. Various music learning backgrounds made no difference in the improvement on the melodic aural ability of participants who received Inner Hearing Training. 4. No reciprocated relations among the variables, such as different teaching methods, gender and music learning background, were found in the improvement on the melodic aural ability of participants. Different teaching methods were the crucial cause for the improvement on the melodic aural ability of the third-grade elementary school students. Finally, based on the results of the study, researcher make some suggestions respectively for teachers who are looking for efficient teaching methods, and for scholars who are interested in researches in music education.
