Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣海洋大學 === 航運管理學系 === 96 === Since bulk shipping market is very close to a perfect competitive market, bulk shipping corporations have to face drastic global competitions. The bulk shipping market can be influenced by various factors such as politics, economics, weather and so forth which lead to high risks and uncertainty. As the sixth bulk vessel tonnage suppliers in the world, Taiwan plays an important role in the global shipping market. The final purpose of chartering is to transport cargoes; thus, the operation of voyage charter is the basic form of shipping operation. The chartering decisions have been discussed in some literature; however, they have never been analyzed systematically. Therefore, this study applies Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as the core method to construct a hierarchical analysis framework for voyage chartering decisions. Furthermore, we also adopt importance-performance analysis (IPA) and importance-performance and tolerance analysis (IPTA) to analyze the service quality of shipping corporations. Lastly, this study applies Scenario Analysis(SA) to analyze the portfolios of voyage charter. Results indicate that:
1. “Contract and principal” is the most important objective of voyage chartering decisions, followed by “attributes of cargo and payment”. In respect of criteria, “financing ability of principal” is the most important criterion, followed by “cargo type.”
2. In order to improve the service quality of shipping corporations, “selection of chartering broker” in short-term voyage charter and trip time charter should be improved chiefly. As for forward voyage charter, “risk preference of manager” is the prior criterion which needs improvements. In addition, “ship age” and “cargo quantity” are the first two criteria requiring improvements.
3. In respect with portfolios of voyage chartering alternatives, short-term voyage charter alternative is main operating method in the peak and expansion period; contract of affreightment alternative is main operating method in the recession and trough period.
It is expected that the finding of this study can serve as a good reference for shipping companies in making chartering operations and service quality improvements.
