Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 幼兒教育學系碩士班 === 96 === The main purpose of this study was to investigate, through seven self-designed “Polyhedral Activities with Polydrons,” young children’s strategies of constructing polyhedra and knowledge about polyhedra. Qualitative data were collected and analyzed among six children aged 5 to 6 in a public kindergarten in Tainan via observation, video-taping, tape-recording and interview. The conclusions of this study are as follows:
First, these children often used three strategies when they constructed polyhedra. They were “edge connection with each other”, “extension from the center,” and “the combination of two strategies described above.” Usages of these strategies depended on children’s experiences of construction and the complexity of polyhedra.
Second, these children were able to describe polyhedra concerning their shapes and pieces for construction. They were also able to compare the similarities and differences between or among different polyhedra.
Third, these children were capable to draw the net of polyhedra. Most of them were capable to distinguish whether a net is a repeated one by its upside-down and/or mirror images.
Finally, some suggestions for future studies about this topic and for kindergarten teachers in designing polyhedral activities were also made in this study.
