Abstract
Schedule delays occur in most of ODM product development, which is a critical problem in the management of research and development. It’s not easy to control schedule; the main reasons are due to, in addition to the needs for the development of technology breakthroughs, the needs for proper development cycle time management.
This research focuses on how to curtail the development cycle time of DSC ODM products by applying product and cycle-time excellence (PACE) as a research framework. The goal is to discuss the effective methods through simultaneous engineering concept and development cycle time management. In addition, the research analyzes and explores feasible solutions to solve core problems on cycle time management and development schedule in the current development phases.
The research uses actual participations, interviews, and observations in the case firm’s project execution to understand the problems of DSC product development process and the evolution of the process to curtail the development cycle time. The results of this study confirm the suitability of development techniques with PACE framework and in addition provide a new improved product development process and related practice. The research also provides a practical model of phased improvements in cycle time management. Building on the success on the first phase of improvements, second phase can drive advanced cycle time management techniques to further cut down the product development cycle time. This phased approach could provide a practical model for the continuous improvement on the ODM product development.
