The research target is focused on eight members of mentally retarded students in the senior grade of an elementary school located in the Taichung County. The research method is based on the implementation of motor skill evaluations before and after the adapted physical education of teaching. During the instruction period the data and relevant information are collected through the qualitative method. Besides, the curriculums include teaching these students how to pitch a ball, catch a ball and kick a ball. The curriculums last for 10 weeks so that the investigation into the changing manipulation movement skills of the mentally retarded students can be thoroughly observed and explored. The collection of the research data is highlighted both in its quality and quantity. In the quantification of this research, the movement skill evaluation is implemented based on Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test to analyze the changing behaviors of the manipulation movement skills of the mentally retarded students before and after the adapted physical education of training. The qualitative information is collected through video recording, participation observation and teaching diaries, and the information is further analyzed, organized and categorized. The results of the research are concluded as the following: 1.After the implementation of the adapted physical education of teaching, these mentally retarded students show significant improvements over their overall manipulation movement skills such as how to pitch a ball, catch a ball and kick a ball. 2.The research also concludes that the mentally retarded students can all participate in the curriculums and practices actively. Through the interaction between teachers and peer group, the technique of mastering the manipulation movement skills can be greatly enhanced. Finally, the research also proposes some suggestions based on the results of the research so that special education teachers and physical education teachers can apply these research results into their adapted physical education curriculums for their convenience and for relevant researches in the future.
