碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 輔導與諮商研究所 === 96 === Making meanings of Middle-aged Women Who Experienced Loss of Their Mothers Abstract The aim of the research was to conduct a research on making meanings of middle-aged women who experienced loss of mothers and to explore related factors of making meanings from their narratives. The subjects of this research were three middle-aged women who experienced loss of their mothers using a narrative research method. Then holistic-content analysis was adopted to present their life stories and using categorical-content analysis to analyze data. After analyzing the data, the results were as follow: 1. Making meanings of middle-aged women who experienced loss of their mothers From the making meaning of three participants who experienced loss of their mothers, we can find three aspects. (1) The meaning of nature of death In participants’ making meanings, “the death of the mothers was a kind of relief of mother herself and family members”, and “realizing the inevitability of death” were their realization and discovery about the essential meaning of death. (2) The personal meaning of death In participants’ making meanings, “awareness and encounter of personal death”, “personal growth and becoming stronger”, and “more freedom in life and future-oriented attitude” were their realization and discovery about personal meanings after facing the sense of loss about death. From this few parts, we can find that facing death will help people become healthier in their psychology. (3) The changing of interpersonal relationships In participants’ making meanings, “advancing positive development of interpersonal relationships” and “the changing of relationships with original family” were participants’ interpersonal relationships after facing death. 2. Related factors of making meanings From the analysis of this research, we can find ten related factors of making meanings. If we put these ten related factors in above mentioned time dimensions we can find the related factors before the happening of grief were childhood experience, previous grieving experience, the mother-daughter relationship before mothers’ death and fortune-telling, the related factors at the happening of grief were personalities, family support, religious rituals, and the related factors accompanied with grief were support from the social networking, life opportunities, change in environment and minor pressures. With the result of this study, analyst proposed suggestions for further consulting and related future studies.
