Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 英語學系 === 96 === The Little Prince has been published for sixty years, but it is still popular today. This book is written in plain words, so it is always recognized as a simple children’s book. Nevertheless, many allegorical meanings pervade this book so that one cannot understand them without profound speculation and exploration. Therefore, this thesis intends to explore the allegorical meanings the author wants to express by means of scrutinizing fictitious characters and objects so as to explain why The Little Prince should be regarded as an allegory for adults.
Chapter One briefly introduces Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s life and works in order to provide readers with the background information of the creation of The Little Prince. On the other hand, this chapter discusses allegory and its relevance to The Little Prince to explore the allegorical meanings of the book in two aspects. Chapter Two explores the allegorical meanings of the fictitious characters that the little prince meets. Chapter Three discusses the allegorical meanings of the objects that the little prince encounters. Chapter Four, by combining all the allegorical meanings that Saint-Exupéry wants to express in order to provide adults with more reflections, concludes why The Little Prince is a successful, thought-provoking allegory for the adult.
