In order to reduce the cost, many cameras use a single sensor covered with a color filter array (CFA). In the CFA-based sensor configuration, only one color component is measured at each pixel and the missing two color components are estimated in order to reconstruct the full-color images.
In the thesis, we propose a practical color interpolation algorithm, which is edge directed and interpolate the color components of pixels along the edge to reduce edge blurring and color artifacts. We experiment on several full-color images and compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other color interpolation algorithms. The experiment results show that the proposed method surely improves the quality of interpolated images and requires low computation complexity. Furthermore, the color artifacts are reduced and edges keep sharp. The proposed algorithm produces the better average demosaicking performance in both objective and subjective senses.
