OE once obtained 60% market share around the globe but it has lost the leading position since the year of 2005. The main purposes of this study are to investigate why OE has been losing competitive advantage in recent years and find out what core competence should OE purse in order to regain its competitive advantage and once again become the leader in the marketplace. Data were collected from the experienced researcher’s observation, interaction with customers and business participation in the past twelve months.The primary data of this study were collected from the researcher’s long-term observation, and in-depth interviews with managers of OE and OE’s major client Advantage Semiconductor Engineer, Inc, Kaohsiung branch. The secondary data were collected from reviewing OE’s internal reports, documents, as well as information on related websites. The results indicate that OE should strive to have superior performance in five areas: (1) technical skills, (2) responsiveness to customers, (3) after sales service, (4) quality and cost, and (5) innovation and support. In addition, it is necessary for OE to have a superior management team to integrate and coordinate these five capabilities into a dynamic bundle of core competence which would be valuable, rare, and costly to imitate.
