Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 觀光暨遊憩管理研究所 === 96 === Hotels are “homes away from home” for travelers, whereas hotels may also have substantial negative impacts on the environment while serving their guests. In order to reduce these impacts, the concept of Green Hotel has emerged. Actually, hotels, especially resort hotels, take advantage of the environment to create value and to attract guests and to generate revenue. Therefore, resort hotels should pay more attention to the implementation of environmental practices to preserve the natural resources. From an academic viewpoint, considerable number of studies have investigated the perceptions and feasibility of the general public, hotel guests, and even hotel managers toward environmental practices in the hospitality industry. However, hotel employees, who play a key role for successful environmental practices, were surprisingly neglected in previous literature. This research intends to investigate the attitudes of hotel employees toward environmental practices in Hualien, a destination famous for its natural beauty in the East part of Taiwan. In Hualien, hotels heavily rely on natural resources, they should pay attention on the conservation of the environment. Accordingly, four major resort hotels in Hualien were chosen in this research. All hotel employees and managers were asked to fill out a close-ended questionnaire, through to assess their attitudes toward Green Hotel as well as to identify the importance and feasibility of environmental practices in these hotels. Finally, 668 questionnaires were obtained (response rate was 63.61%) and 589 questionnaires were valid. The results of ANOVA tests showed that the respondents’ perceptions of environmental practices significantly varied according to their age, job positions, seniority levels, and education levels. Both hotel employees and managers had positive attitudes toward Green hotel, but managers’ attitudes were significantly higher. On the other hand, 23 important and feasible environmental practices were identified and could be classified into four categories, namely “encourage employees to adopt a green lifestyle in their jobs ”,”set up green purchasing principles ”, “establish the platform for green message communications”, and ”develop healthier and greener diets”.
