In sitting posture, the subjects were instructed to execute two modes of throwing, one is speed-oriented, the other accuracy-oriented. Both of velocity and accuracy of the two throwing were measured in each subject. ROM of 3 joints of the upper extremities was measured by using a goniometer. Isometric strength of 16 upper arm’s movements was evaluated by using a hand-held dynamometer. The data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson’s product-moment correlation and one-way ANOVA. The results show that: 1, significant differences are shown in strength between throwing speed. Among 16 isometric strengths recorded, shoulder external rotation and elbow supination are highly correlated with the throwing speed, the factors are 0.585 and 0.562 (P<.01), respectively. 7 movements, namely, shoulder flexion, shoulder, shoulder internal rotation, wrist extension, wrist flexion, wrist radial deviation, and wrist ulnar deviation are moderately correlated with the throwing speed (P<.05). 2, ROM of a few joint movements is critical for throwing accuracy. 3, throwing accuracy is attenuated when emphasizing throwing speed. 4, in contrast, throwing velocity is attenuated when emphasizing throwing accuracy. 5, performance of the throwing is better in pitchers than fielders.
