All compounds were characterized by 1H, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The phase behaviors of these mesogenic compounds were characterized and studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarization optical microscope(POM). Ligand 2a and 2b exhibited Smectic phase, but the complex 1c exhibited Colho phase. We can use powder X-ray and single crystal to assume the arrangement of liquid crystal. Ligands exist intermolecular hydrogen bonding by characterization of FT-IR. We find intermolecular hydrogen bonding is very important for the formaton of liquid crystal. In addition, aluminum complex exhibited SmA phase. From single crystal date, the complex is six ligand coordinate to two aluminum atoms.
