Borne in China in 1898, the son of Elizabeth Root and Henry Winters Luce, who was a Presbyterian missionary. In 1941, Henry R. Luce use "American Century" to claim the historical role of the United States during the 20th century. American had to accept the duty as the most powerful and vital nation in the world and in consequence to exert upon the world the full impact of American influence.   Because Henry R. Luce born in China, he admiration Chinese people and culture. He yearn to see Chinese become a proud and powerful nation allied to the United States. He want to see China Christianized, modernized, and democratized. So he use his media - Time - to sway American opinion against Mao Tse Tung and Chinese communists in favor of Chiang Kai-Shek.   The purpose of this thesis, mainly study in Henry R. Luce, and the idea of American Century and image of China in the Time Magazine. The ideas of Henry Luce and the Time magazine as a role of image-maker, how dose this effect American opinion? And how dose the term “American Century” arise ? We can understand those issues by research the role of Henry R. Luce.
