The value of cultured fish is decided by its appearance and taste. Previously study has found that SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cystein /osteonectin) protein, translated by sparc gene, is mostly expressed in bone and ECM, could modulate the interaction between cells and extracellular matrix and regulate signal transduction. SPARC is involved in the development of ossified and mineralized tissues, tissue morphogenesis and cellular differentiation. Probably SPARC can affect the appearance of marketing fish. Besides, previous studies also showed that SPARC may regulate fat production, but the results can be polarized into two directions. In this project, we studied the functions and mechanisms of SPARC protein in fish cell and also discussed the physiological importance by observing the expression level during embryo development, virus infection and expression levels in various tissues. The results suggest that SPARC protein can binds to calcium ion and the binding of calcium ion is vital to SPARC function. Even the recombinant protein of SPARC EC (extracellular calcium binding) domain can show a minor anti-spreading activity to GF-1 cell. As a multifunctional ECM (extracellular matrix) modulator, SPARC expressed more on the early stage of embryo development and mainly in tissues contact with external environment, thereby influences many important physiological and pathological processes.
